John Havlicek, goodbye to a champion…
As horse players, we are usually loving champions. We remember with great fondness the champions we came to admire when we started our journey in handicapping. For me, this love of great champions, both on my teams and “agin” my teams, is what I am all about. Today, I would like to take a moment to remember – with you – the amazing John Havlicek who ruled the hardwood floor of the Boston Garden, Madison Square Garden and everywhere else he played. He played for the “hated” Boston Celtics through most of the 60’s and 70’s. And if you were a New York Knick fan, as I was, you simply couldn’t help but admire this man – even though you were hoping he would get a stomach ache and have to leave the game. He was, until Larry Bird came to Boston, the best all around basketball player of his era. He was the consummate team player, with the intense individual skills and an amazing ability to produce the big play. He will forever be known for the play he made on the defensive side… “the steal”… but he was an elegant, not flashy but elegant basketball player. Bill Russell called him the best player of his time (even though Bill Russell might really be the best player of all time and they played together) and I think Bill knows a thing or two about great basketball players.
His game was so good, I came to love his play, his elegance, his team oriented approach – he was just so intensely great that he won me over! He became one of my all-time favs, even while he was beating my beloved New York Knicks.
