Talking Handicapping with my players…

I received an e-mail from one of our players… Here is both his question and my answer… feel free to ask a handicapping question… just send me an e-mail..

e-mail question from BK

Dear Jerry

Know you put your figures together for tomorrow’s show. I was wondering in looking at both races how do you separate Game Winner and Improbable who seem to have run the same races with exactly the same final times? Is it possible to say Game Winner ran the best versus stronger competition in Omaha Beach?

Just interested in how you can split the two Bafferts.

Regards, BK

Replay from JJ

Everything is possible… but for me, there are other ways, that I feel are better… comparing the performances including how they ran through the different early quarter miles, is where I start… So for example, if one horse came back and ran a much faster internal fractions, then it would be acceptable if he slowed down a little at the end, because he ran inefficiently… while compared to if the other horse ran MORE EFFICIENTLY, but moving through each quarter mile in a more even way…

Then we can compare the efforts to the way they ran previously… So for example, if a horse was to handle a certain way of running as a 2 year old, and then able or unable to handle that same “efficiency” as a 3 year old…

I hope to have these done for tomorrow… as it happens I will be working on Oaklawn later today,

Jerry

Rebels answer a few questions…

The first thing we learned, which is what we should all know, betting ODDS – ON chalk is simply stupid and painful.  Bob Baffert sent in 3 horses, all couldn’t lose!  All went off at Odds-On… and guess what, they all LOST!  The worst was Denman’s Call in the 4th, who forgot to break with the rest of the horses… then was forced to RUSH into contention, then rallied 4-5 wide, THEN bumped with his rival and finished 2nd by a HEAD.  HE was clearly 10 lengths the best, except at the cashier’s window.  Then Improbably lost as the chalk and he was followed up by Game Winner with all that money in his saddle bags, unable to drag the cash riding on his back to victory.

The most interesting story might be the contest customer at TVG who was 7 for 7 going into Game Winner, for $100,000.00.  That’s right a full HUNDY!  TVG was not forced to payoff.  That rates as one of the worst beats in horse racing history…  But I had worse ( you will have to read my book – if I ever write it)…

Improbable doesn’t look like he wants to go much further than 1 MILE to my eye.  Game Winner is tougher to understand, I thought he raced well, but I am concerned that he leveled off some in his development.  That’s my visual on them, when I have studied their Speed figs, I will have more to offer… Omaha Beach, really gave the impression that he can run much further, an excellent trait to carry toward the KD…
