The beauty of playing small fields…
Racing continues this Sunday with another smallish card at Santa Anita. This may be upsetting to some, but as I learned early on in my career – from the best player – small fields are terrific bankroll builders. It’s still a simple concept… find a horse that is paying more than he should and make a play on that horse.
Typically, you might consider a horse with a 25% chance of winning, who is off at 5/1. In this case you will win 1 in 4 times and be paid a premium if you get the 5/1. Continue doing this and you will build your bankroll! In a smaller field, say 5 horses, the proposition might be that you think a horse will win 50% of the time, and possibly looking at odds of 3/2. Can you imagine playing blackjack and getting paid 3/2 on a hand of 20! These types of propositions will occur over and over again and sometimes you will see an example like Cistron from Saturday’s 5th race. While I would agree that Kantharos and Dr. Dorr were more likely to win, maybe at 2/1 and 3/1… Cistron certainly would win this race between 15% and 20% of the time… or said another way, 1in 5 or 1 in 6 times… as we all know, Cistron won paying almost 7/1…
Sure the others were a little more likely, but the odds made Cistron a Pop-Out-Key… the kind that will be happening more and more during this period of small fields and difficult handicapping. This is actually the best time to be playing Santa Anita – but only if you are thinking that building your bankroll is the object of your play!
I am going to repeat something now, that I will be repeating over and over again… You don’t need me to put you on chalk, but you have to try and find the strength to NOT PLAY THE CHALK…
