3-year old racing season begins in the Swale with a bullet…
Mischievious Alex came off a layoff to run a hole in the wind! He was on the engine from the get go against some very fast-early types, and then widened from there. I was surprised to hear trainer Servis say that he doesn’t think he will point him for races beyond 1 MILE. A win as spectacular as that usually gets the connections crowing pretty good, but the Servis family are all thoughtful people and true professionals.
Then in the Holy Bull, we say a fabulous run by Tiz The Law, he looked best of this crew and did produce a very solid run. He looked a little green through the stretch, so this could well be a signal that this colt has much room to improve. Everything here is promising!
The Withers showed a very strong closing effort from Max Player, but it was on a track that seemed to be favoring late running types, so it looked good, but we will have to wait for the figs to see if this colt is a contender.
Then at the Bev Lewis in Santa Anita, we probably witnessed the best (most competitive) of the 3-year old races run on Saturday. Thousand Words sat a perfect trip and then came out for a solid run through the stretch. It appeared to me the colts who had the toughest trips would have been Tizamagician and Royal Act. Tizamagician probably had the most difficult trip, but he didn’t go on like a horse that would handle more distance – to my eye. On the other hand, Royal Act looks like he is coming to hand. No knock here on any of the colts, in what the signs say was a competitive and well run race.
On more comment form the observation deck, Midcourt is on the way up and Roadster, not so much….
