The 3rd Leg of the Triple Crown finally arrives, in this topsy-turvy year of 2020. We will all remember this year, it’s a true asterisk year – every record, every event will be denoted as such!
But interestingly, we have a Preakness following the Kentucky Derby, on nearly 4 weeks differential, whereas normally there is only a 2 week difference. This may bode well for next years racing, and this marvelous crop of 3-year old colts should have plenty of chance to mature into 2021.
Back the the here and now, the winner of the Kentucky Derby has a huge statistical advantage of repeating in the Preakness, but these circumstances are totally different. Yet, I suspect we will get a similar result. As many of you know, I was very high on Authentic very early in the year and without Tiz The Law to make him run to his max, this could be a “procession” for Authentic. True that I also like Art Collector a great deal, but he is going to encounter a faster and fitter horse than he has ever faced before!
The race is exceptional though, because the underneaths are really interesting and I think there is the ability to build some excellent Tris and Supers.
The Black Eyed Susan is not nearly as fascinating, but a superb betting race. I think it’s worth some deep analysis and a good bet on a price horse…
