Authentic wins the Haskell, but…

Authentic is without question a Grade I colt, in a boom year for the colts.  But he is not that class of horse beyond 1 MILE  (maybe out 1 1/16).  But it’s without question, that he has a distinct distance limitation!  That being said, we can see at the 1 1/6th mile marker, Frank Miramati was exclaiming that Ayuthentic was “breezing on the lead”… and then just a moment later we could see NY Traffic, who was just doing nothing, was suddenly making up ground on Authentic rapidly.  It was not so much that NY TRAFFIC was re-rallying, but more a case that AUTHENTHIC was starting to lose his stride!  Big Money Mike did everything he could to shake up Authentic, and did enough to win a photo, but to my eye, the horse didn’t really respond.  He had a big lead and then a big struggle… and he was really lucky to hold sway.

Del Mar takes this week off, back on the 24th! 

An outbreak of the COVID-19, effecting 15 jocks, has caused DMTC to close the racing at Del Mar for this weekend.  And will pick up next Fri, Sat & Sunday!  But wait there is more…  they will also add a 4th day of racing for MONDAY.  So they will have a 4 day race week, starting on July 24, 25, 26 & 27.

Saratoga has the CCA Oaks and Monmouth has the Haskell…

Tonalist’s Shape ships up to Saratoga from Gulfstream Park for Saffie Joseph, hung with the 9/5 favoritism role.  Saffie J. is a terrific conditioner, anyone who follows Florida racing, nows he is fantastic! So I would assume he will have a ready filly to take on this rather pedestrian group of 3-year old fillies.  Did I say “pedestrian”, that’s really not fair.  Fillies often develop a little later on, and can come to hand quite suddenly!  Meanwhile, Bob Baffert ships in Crystal Ball who rates out very well and with a 4/1 M/L, is very attractive from a wagering point of view, but I doubt that price will be available – really!  And there are others, because to be frank, neither Tonalist’s Shape or Crystall Ball send any chills up my spine…

At the Haskell, Authentic is dropping in class today!  It’s just that simple, but it’s certainly not automatic.  I suppose Authentic will go off at odds on, and is a likely winner.  We all know that Bob Baffert dominates this race nearly every single year.  And when he doesn’t win, his horses always put up a big run!  Dr. Post is pretty interesting, and seemingly on the move forward in form.  His final 6 furlongs at Belmont in his last was turning better than 12s, which is a sign of a very nice stakes horse.  It can also be a great sign of imprvoment in horses form cycle. (for those of you who are curious about the term 12s… it means a closing type horse, that runs route races (1 mile or longer) with continous furlongs in 12 seconds or under).

These are both important races, as we arrive in the fall season, we will be asked to understand how these races fit into the form cycles of these horses.
