The 3 Preps, The Wood, The Bluegrass and The S. A. Derby!
Here we go, with Haikal, Tax, a new face in Hoffa’s Union and Tacitus meet several other less potent – so far – runners to duke it out in the long heralded Wood Memorial. This was the race that Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid and many, many more Kentucky Derby winners used as their primary prep. Almost 10 years ago one of my customer’s Frankie from Texas, told me the Wood was no longer a good place to prep for the KD. I thought that didn’t make any sense. But he has proved to be quite correct. But I don’t see why that’s the case, because it is as well situated as The Bluegrass and the Santa Anita Derby! But it’s been quite a long time since a KD winner was a participant in the Wood. That being said, Haikal really catches my eye as he moves late with beautiful fluid strides. He is running faster than every other horse he as ever faced through the final 1/4 mile. He is high on my list of KD contenders and ultra dangerous on this stretch out.
The Bluegrass, we will discuss later… Everyone who buys a JJPP will get a Bluegrass sent to them either late tonight or tomorrow. I will be back a little later to discuss the Bluegrass, because as of this moment… I haven’t completed the handicapping…
The Santa Anita Derby features 2 horses from the legendary Bob Baffert. Who for some reason, has become the worst play on the grounds for some unknown reason. He sent 3 horses to Oaklawn, they all went off at ODDS on and they all were unable to defeat competition in the final 1/8th of a mile. Beyond that, he has had numerous high figure horse get beat in the stretch by relatively common type competition… over and over again. With that in mind, I am giving Instagrand another chance after his poor stretch run at Aqueduct in his first race of the year. He was still brilliant, but he was not fit enough to take on Haikal and Tax in the stretch of the 1 mile event. While disappointing, I think good handicapping insists we should expect an improved effort and the 2-turns might well suit him. While I don’t think he is a legit KD type horse, I do think on his first stretch around 2-turns we can cash an overlay… taking the money bet on the the Baffert duo of Roadster and Game Winner — who is absolutely the legit favorite here and may be your eventual KD winner… But it’s smart to stay with the trends…
Good Luck… and enjoy…
