Belmont & Santa Anita today …
Belmont once again has many, many turf races, and I fully expect all the turf races to be conducted on the Turf. What a concept. I cannot understand why they didn’t race on Friday on the Turf, I suspect the NYRA officials were thinking this would be better for Saturday’s races. To my mind they sacrificed 5 excellent races of another set of 5 excellent races… with none being better or worse for the handicapper – that would be you and me. If running on Friday, would have caused the NYRA officials of having to scratch 2 or 3 of Saturday’s turf races to accommodate the traffic on the softer going… so be it… we still would have had more races to handicap as they are carded.
That’s my opinion… I always say… if you card’em for the turf, then run’em on the turf!
Santa Anita presents another card that resembles Friday’s card. As I said on Race Day Las Vegas, I like small cards. I was taught by the greatest horse player I have ever known, that small fields are great bankroll builders. His explanation was perfect, an overlay is a percentage advantage in your favor, and the percentage of the overlay remains – no matter the size of the field. But in small fields we will cash more often! I identified 3 Pop Out Keys, 2 that were listed as Feature Plays. The 2 Feature Plays both won at overlay prices! One paying $9.40 to win in a 6 horse field ( that was Storming Lady in the 2nd) and the 2nd paying $6.40 in a 5 horse field (Zusha in the 5th), this was just a fair value.
Obviously, it’s my feeling that you can bet these situations with more conviction and win with a higher frequency… So what’s wrong with that…
Oh yeah, we have more of that on Satruday!
