Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing square off in this years edition of the Jim Dandy. The Jim Dandy was one of the races that really caught my attention and helped to build my love affair with horse racing. In 1978, Senstitive Prince, let me restate this, the GREAT SENSITIVE PRINCE, had a 6 length lead in the Jim Dandy turning into the home stretch. The Triple Crown winner, Affirmed seemd to have little to offer and was hopelessly beaten! WRONG!!!!
Affirmed, literally had a change of heart and decided once again, no matter his condition, that there was not going to be any horse in front of him at the wire. He made up the 6 lengths, and beat Sensitive Prince by a “big nose”, just like he did to anyone who thought they might be in his class. As for Sensitive Prince, he went on to win several races including the Widener Handicap at Hialeah the following spring in record breaking fashion. When I watched Sensitive Prince route his competition in Florida the following spring, I was amazed that any horse could run him down from even 1 length. But Affirmed was truly amazing.
And while I thought I had seen a horse with the ability and the pluck to match up to Affirmed, we learned last week, that hasn’t happened yet.
Tomorrow, we will be looking at our Kentucky Derby Champion match up against our Preakness winner, Cloud Computing. The first thing I want to say, Always Dreaming really has been the tougher competitor. CC really picked up the pieces of the speed duel that Classic Empire and Always Dreaming engaged in. Always Dreaming was suppose to BOUNCE TO THE MOON off his tour de force in the KD. So his Preakness is just a throw away race. So Always Dreaming should be able to be a bit more relaxed tomorrow. So 100 out of 100 times, I would play Always Dreaming instead of Cloud Computing at odds that were trying to underlay Always Dreaming. But to tell you the truth, my play most likely will be on another horse… Because no matter what, these two will always remain betting traps to one degree or another… and there is another 3 year old that fascinates me.
Bias notation…Saratoga’s main track was really HONEST… while Del Mar once again was difficult to see any passing in the lane. This is one of strongest and longest lasting Speed favoring biases I have seen…
Updates… well I am needing to conserve. so updates will be pushed out another day or two.. but we are winning…
