Thursday at Saratoga…
This card has numerous high priced possibilities, many near or at the top of the rankings. More than one are marked as POP-OUT-KEYs!
What is a Pop-Out-Key and why do I repeat this term over and over again! First of all, I didn’t make up the term, rather it was made up by one of my two amazing “teachers” that really taught me how to play properly. In it’s simplest understanding, a POK is an overlay, but the term indicates a way of betting the horse, not just his relative odds advantage.
It’s really simple… it comes from betting a 10/1 horse that got beat on the money, but came in 2nd and I lost the bet. My “teach” asked me why I didn’t make a place bet also… and reward myself for excellent handicapping. My answer was worth ignoring! He then went on to say to me, when you establish your CONTENDERS LIST of 3 or 4 horses. Then you look at the odds board and determine which one of these horses POPS out at you for value and handicapping. Instead of getting locked in on the horse you think has the most handicapping ideas… get locked in on the one that actually pops out for value as well as handicapping ideas. Then use it as a KEY horse in a spread… to win and place…
That’s the story… and I am sticking to it!
