It turns out that reasonable people can see the same thing, yet they can disagree. That was the case between Ralph and me on Wednesday. In last Saturday’s Preakness Ralph saw the race as a ‘steal” by Gary Stevens on Oxbow. To my eye, that could possibly be the case, but after reviewing the figs for the race (all the races) it simply appears that Oxbow was in better shape than everyone else, ran a very credible race and just outran his opposition. Goldencents certainly tried to go up alongside Oxbow, but then fell back. Itsmyluckyday came after him at the top of the stretch, but was turned away and not gaining anything at the end.
Sometimes we want to explain an event to satisfy how we feel about it. That’s okay if it makes you happy, but for me, I need my speed figs to help me to know — what it is I am looking at! I say, Oxbow ran very well and everyone else was either ran poorly or was bothered by the negative rail bias…
