Santa Anita is ready, Aqueduct cancelled due to weather conditions…
The Road to the KD begins…
The new 3 year olds presented this past weekend in The Withers at Aqueduct, The Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park and The Lewis at Santa Anita. Surprise, surprise, surprise, the winner of the BC Juvy threw a real stinker! (My last piece, reminded everyone how hard it has been to win the BC Juvy and the KD and remain undefeated.)
Meanwhile, up in New York a really exciting 3 year old flew home through the lane to win — El Areeb — looking good and running a decent figure — 74.5. But best of all, was he wasn’t taking advantage of the lively rail, but did the hard work on the outside line – displaying a real finishing kick… impressive.
At Gulfstream, Irish War Cry ( my pick on Race Day Las Vegas ) got the job done, but has yet to run anything good enough to consider him a contender, one nice comment on him is he didn’t save every bit of ground. But the easy lead in soft fractions basically makes this race a negative – not something he can build on.
Then we moved out to So. California at Santa Anita and saw Royal Mo move to an easy lead, take advantage of soft fractions and an inside speed bias to get the job done. Looking pretty good, but the figs and the bias will not help him either, however there are two developing colts in IRAP and SHEER FANTASY, that both produced nice forward going moves — against the bias — that should help to propel their form forward…

Race Day Las Vegas Section (through Sunday 1-29-2017)
Thursday
Aqueduct – Race #7 Dad’Z Laugh, off at 7/2 Ran along well to attend the pace, off some 3 lengths, commenced a rally, but spent too much time on the sluggish rail… got 3rd…
Santa Anita – Race #6 Filly On Fire off at 6/1 (after the favorite gate scratched) attended the pace inside but just behind the leaders, managed to get in behind slow cover, and fell back to 6th, but then rallied to get 4th. It’s not clear if the filly had “no run” or was “in tight and lost all chance”… finished 4th.
Friday 2-3
Aqueduct Is She Hot…off at 16/1… no Bueno…
Santa Anita Partyinthepaddock off at 5/2 … ran along for a minor award…
Saturday 2-4
Aqueduct Sir Bond off at 3/1… ran huge to win after tough wide trip…Paid $8.20
Gulfstream Irish War Cry off at 4/1… ran to an easy lead, winning off as much the best in a race that went well BELOW par…paying $10.80
Santa Anita Domestic Vintage…off at 6/5… ran along okay, was blocked for much of the stretch, hard to say if he would have made his presence felt with a clear trip, no matter what, this was an UNDERLAY at 6/5…
Sunday 2-5
Aqueduct Race #9 Esther The Queen off at 5/2, ran very well, securing the place, but never better than 2nd best to a surprisingly good Katie Ice (at least to my eye)…
Santa Anita…Race # 1 Ky. Colonel off at 16/1, ran a terrific race to just miss, while holding the place, just needed another little head to cash this play on the win… hope everyone had the place or exacta reverses… got the place!
