Yesterday we talked about races with lots of competition in “current form” as being defined by many horses within a 2.5 range of points… Today’s discussion will be on horses with “wet track” notations…
First let me say, that I NEVER make a negative comment on any horses ability to handle WET going. Simply it makes no sense, because they all can fool you for a wide variety of reasons. For example I have seen horses who dislike the slop or muddy going at Belmont, but run fine on the WET going at Aqueduct. So it’s not always clear who likes wet and under what circumstances they might like WET going… Then of course there are different types of WET aligned with associated preference for one or the other…
Here is what I do… IF a horse has run on some type of WET going and shown a clear improvement on the WET track, then that horse gets an “m” or an “M” – and so the PPN on today’s sheet will reflect the horses current form plus from 1 to 4 points… So if the horses form is at 69.0 and he likes the WET, then the horse will be assigned a number from 70.0 to as high as 73.0… You can look back at the Past Performances and see if you can see the race or races on WET track that indicate to me the required increase in there PPN (for those of you who are new to this site, PPN stands for the Projected Power Number I assign each horse). It’s that simple, so if you see a horse rated very high and that horse does not have an “m or M” and the track is WET, then you have to decide if the odds warrant a wager on this horse or if you should look elsewhere… Your call…. However, I would be suspect of any horse — running on a wet track, at low odds — that did not have an mud mark….
I keep my own Breeding stats and assign a “p or a P” for horses that appear to me to be well bred to improve in the WET. Their PPN’s are NOT improved, so you might consider these horses to have a higher potential upside…
Friday’s card should be for WET conditions, as wet weather was hitting Brooklyn throughout Thursday night and the forecast for Friday is for more WET weather…
