It’s Whitney Day at Saratoga…
I am remembering back to 1978 and the first Whitney I remember handicapping for. I had been taught not to play a good 3-year old against top-quality 4-year olds. And so I was surprised to see Alydar, catch all the leaders as they turned for home and then open an amazing 10 length advantage through the lane – AMAZING!
Then a few years later, I was not so easily mislead, when The greatest racing mare – I have ever seen – Personal Ensign took on the boys in the Whitney. The field was widdled down to 3 (maybe 4) and the very fast Gulch had the chance to make all the running on the sloppy main track. Personal Ensign caught him and all his advantages and breezed on by — as she got ready for her next major effort in taking on Winning Colors in the Breeders’ Cup.
The WHITNEY is always a great race and there are some great memories…
