Two great distaff fillies duke it out at Oaklawn Park…
No doubt we got the stretch duel that made us love horse racing, but it was between Letruska and Monomoy Girl. Swiss Skydiver backed out as if she wasn’t suppose to be that good. I am sure she is, so something must be adjusted under the hood. It could be many things and one of them might be that she was mismanaged – in my opinion – by jockey Albarado. He asked her right out of the gate. Everthing about the trip looked uncomfortable. Seems to me, with her breaking sh well, he should have just gone on with it… If she wasn’t fit enough – then so be it, but to try and finesse the race while getting her into the bridle when the gate opened,,, just doesn’t make much sense to me…
Now for Monomy Girl and Letruska, maybe the difference was Irad Ortiz, with a stellar left hand whip in the final 1/8th of a mile that got a burst from her, just a few strides before the wire. Monomoy Girl had put a full head in front and seemed to have the race in hand, when Irad went left!
Someone very smart, once said… the jockeys are all even, except at the wire, that when you find out who has that special talent to make a huge difference – even if it’s only an inch!
I thought Monomy Girl ran great, obviously Letruska ran great, because she won this race and Swiss Skydiver is not yet as good at 4-years old as she was at 3-years old.
