Baffert ties Ben Jones, as Authentic defeats Tiz The Law…
In a thrilling stretch duel that put both horses on even terms with the length of the stretch to settle all issues, Authentic, under J.R. Velasquez held sway in a truly memorable event. Tiz The Law broke super sharp and got a bit of an edge on Authentic as soon as the gates opened, Authentic, handled beautifully by J.R. was allowed to settle and find his best stride, without ever rushing him. His natural superior early lick took hold and before they went the full straightaway, he had the lead. The as the race developed, pretty much like I thought and everyone else on the planet thought, the race moved to the far turn. It was pretty certain as they passed half way through the turn it was going to be one or the other or both… but none of the other horses really looked to have a chance.
Tiz The Law threw down a bold run, but unlike in all his previous efforts when he made that electrifying move and would leave his competition DOA, Authentic stayed right with him. Then they hit the 3/16th pole and Authentic had a little something left.
Honor A. P. was just a dud, sucking up for 4th, beaten a bunch of lengths. the 3rd finisher, Mr. Big News ran great and totally fooled me. I have a feeling he has a secret relationship with Gabriel Saez who he seems to run his best for.
One comment on NY Traffic who came close to beating Authentic last month in the Haskell… very close in fact. I thought the jock, Paco Lopez needed to take a hold on him and have him a little off the pace. This was the first time he moved up to 126 lbs, and I think getting into the early pace at the Derby is especially hard on horses that are not familiar with carrying this impost. It’s a small thing that is terribly hard to predict – that being exactly how a jock will ride a horse in any situation.
I know those of you who visited with me at the Seminar got an earful on how Authentic had a decent chance and was sporting improving form, which everyone with a Power Page could … because I put a STAR on him. But to beat such a great horse as Tiz The Law most likely would have taken a STAR or improved performance from Authentic and maybe a back-step from Tiz The Law. Something he is entitled to.
I am wondering and hoping at the same time that we get to see these two throw down again – together… and to the 4-year… watch out!
