Sunday cards 20 races at Gulfstream & Santa Anita…
Charleton was razor shape in the Saudi, breaking to the front and then moving to the outside of Knicks Go who everyone expected would be out on an easy lead. Not so, Charleton made all the running, even as Knicks Go eventually got on even terms for a few strides, the BIG C just moved away from him with a certain ease!
But sharpness was such that coming through the lane, Charleton got a little late and was snapped in the shadow of the wire by the turf specialist from John Gosden’s barn – Mishriff. Mishriff, who had never run on the Dirt was in full stride and closed relentlessly, when the Big C felt his presence, he responded, but Mishriff had too much momentum and a terrific stride. Taking the advantage and winning by a head!
There had been some rain earlier on, and there was some discussion from the observers that the rail was a little slow… and of course Charleton who was off the rail early on, did go down to the rail for the final 3/8ths of a mile… so that might be a fair excuse. But as far as I am concerned, this was simply a horse that was too sharp…
