Was that Flightline, his effort reminded me of Seattle Slew!
Seattle Slew has been my favorite horse and also the horse that was most impressive to me since I started to bet on horses in 1976. Now, if you think Secretariat or Citation was the greatest horse to ever look through a bridle… hold on to your horses. I didn’t see them in person and can only imagine how good they actually were. But Seattle Slew I watched with the eye of a horse player and have compared every horse to him ever since, including the incredible Affirmed, Alydar, Spectacular Bid, Justify, and other greats.
Slew would take the lead early in a race and then just seem to get faster and faster relative to the field. It was awesome to watch…just awesome. And so it seemed and felt today, watching Flightline today. One thing that Seattle Slew did, that Flightline will have to do, is battle a worth opponent, who is actually in the same class as him. Slew had the young champion Affirmed, who was amazing, amazing, amazing…Remember, with Affirmed, he discarded Spectacular Bid and Coastal as if they were just common horses – just amazing.
For Flightline it might be Life is Good… because there is really no other horse that makes any sense. Unfortunately, Life is Good is not at his best at 1 1/4 mile, where as Seattle Slew and Affirmed were absolutely amazing at the 1 1/4 distance.
We shall see, I hope.
